Capri is a small island situated 5 km from the mainland in the Bay of Naples, a celebrated beauty spot and coastal resort since the days of the Roman Republic until now. It is also part of Campania.

Capri, known in Greek mythology as the isle of the sirens, was a favored resort of the Roman emperors. Most notoriously, the emperor Tiberius had his villa on the island, the location (supposedly) of debauched orgies. Those who displeased the emperor were flung to their deaths from the cliffs. The island is world famous and is very touristy, especially when swamped with tourists in July & August, but other times of year it is calmer and more relaxing. A favorite with Roman emperors, the rich and famous, artists, and writers, it's still one of the Mediterranean's must-see places.

The island's top attraction is the famous Blue Grotto, weather permitting , but you can also ride the chair lift up to the sunny mountain and take a beautiful walking tour to the femouse garden where you will be able to take one of your best pictures.

Tourists arrive by boat at Marina Grande, the island's main harbor. Beaches are scattered around the island. There are only two towns - Capri, just above Marina Grande, and Anacapri, the higher town. the vegetation on the island is lash all year around thanks to the beautiful lemons and orange trees and more then 600 kinds of flowers.

Capri is easily visited as a day trip from Naples or the Amalfi Coast or from Sorrento but would probably be better enjoyed in the mornings  with a private guide that can show you the most beautiful spots of the island where the tourist are not going and skip the lines.  Summer sees about 10,000 tourists a day (about the same amount as the island's population). The island's moderate temperatures make it a year-round destination although spring and fall are the best times to visit.
